Producing the Football Anthem for the England Football Team, Silver Lions

1966 World Cup Rematch Kicking Off 3pm Today!

The World Cup may be over, but England has a chance at international glory of a different kind.

To mark the 60th anniversary of England’s iconic 1966 victory over Germany, England’s Veteran Over 75s (the Silver Lions) are taking to the pitch for a legendary rematch against their European rivals. Exactly 60 years to the minute since the ’66 final, the whistle blows at 3pm TODAY at Boundary Park, Oldham.

And yes, this squad of 22 players (with a combined age of over 1,600!) needed a proper stomp along anthem to lead them into battle.

Introducing: England Together

Ahead of the big game, the team released their official anthem, ‘England Together’—co-written by Bryan Josh (Mostly Autumn), and Chris Johnson, Course Leader for Music Production here at YSJ.  The track produced mainly in York but with with massive support from Tim Hall, Ian Oakland and JP Braddock in DeMontfort University. The full Silver Lions squad joined us in the DeMontfort University studio to belt out the chorus. There were cameras in the studio and the session has been featured on SkySports News.

Here is what Chris had to say about bringing the squad into the studio:

“Recording with the Silver Lions was a real treat. They are such great guys, and we had a lot of laughs. They were all full of good humour, energy, and enthusiasm. A squad full of top performers—I know they’ll deliver for England on the pitch as well!”

Inspired by the power of football to bring people together, Bryan and Chris wanted to write a song loaded with heart and passion to rally the nation behind this incredible team.

More Than Just a Game

This historic match was brought together by our YSJ colleague Tracy Willits (Senior Lecturer in Media Production), who is currently directing the documentary Silver Lions: Football Dreams Never Retire.

Beyond the pitch, the project carries a vital message about staying active, healthy, and happy in later life, with backing from England legend Sir Geoff Hurst himself! Proceeds from the match and single go toward supporting the Oldham Athletic Community Trust.

Let’s turn up the volume and back the boys. Come on England!
