Last week, York St John University hosted an engaging alumni panel featuring several notable graduates from the music production course. Moderated by Chris Johnson, the event included insights from Abi Shaw, a current music production master’s student, Declan Vink, an artist known as Flat Number Two an artist who works for BBC Introducing York, and John Ricketts, co-owner of Likeminded Music Label and Producer of Sonas Audio Services.
The panellists shared their personal journeys in the music industry, focusing on their involvement in the BBC Balcony Sessions and how those experiences opened doors to opportunities such as recording at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. They discussed their paths as emerging artists, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the highs and challenges of building a career in the industry.
A key highlight of the discussion was the role BBC Introducing played in the alumni’s professional growth. The panellists reflected on how various university modules and their time at York St John helped prepare them for their careers in music production.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where attendees had the chance to ask questions about breaking into the industry and the panellists’ advice on leveraging university experiences for career success.
Abi Shaw commented, “It was nerve-wracking speaking in front of everyone, but I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved, and it was great to share that experience. I had a lot of fun, and it felt amazing to talk about something I’m so passionate about.”
The panel served as a valuable platform for current students to gain inspiration and practical insights into the world of music production from successful alumni who have turned their passion into thriving careers.
